These are major operations on patients who have many risk factors. Complications can be minor and major, immediate and long term. Immediate complications include leakage (1 to 4 percent, some of which would require re-operation), death (1-4/1000 patients), pulmonary emboli (blood clot to the lung), wound infection, bleeding, bowel obstruction, and pneumonia.
