Cancer Services for Women and Children
Services for Women
Special comprehensive care, including services delivered by
dedicated gynecological oncologists, is available for women with reproductive
or breast cancer. For women with cancer of the cervix, ovaries, uterus or other
reproductive organs, Inova Cancer Services, in conjunction with Inova
Women's Services, provides a comprehensive treatment program.
Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy or radiation oncology. For breast cancer patients, we offer the full spectrum of multidisciplinary diagnostic methods, treatment options, reconstructive surgery and support services, as well as the latest investigational options, including research in breast cancer pharmaceuticals.
Inova Cancer Services is committed to providing education and screenings for early cancer detection. Educational programs, lectures and screenings for both the public and health care professionals are offered throughout the year at Inova facilities.
Stereotactic Core Breast Biopsies
Stereotactic core breast biopsy is a method of diagnosing nonpalpable mammographically detected lesions. It is less invasive than needle localization breast biopsy and, although slightly more invasive than fine needle aspiration, has superior sensitivity and specificity.
Breast Reconstruction
Inova offers a number of breast reconstruction options, each designed to restore the removed breast tissue with an alternate that resembles the anatomic form and characteristics of a normal breast. Among the procedures offered at Inova are the TRAM flap procedure, which uses tissue from the abdomen to reconstruct the breast, as well as the newer DIEP flap and SIEA flap procedures. The flap procedures spare abdominal muscle tissue, resulting in decreased post-operative pain, less long term abdominal weakness and a decreased chance of post-surgical hernia formation.
