Questions that health care workers should consider before accepting a new
job
When you're on the hunt for a new job in the health care profession, it's
important to think about your own well-being and what you want from a new
employer. When you go to your next interview, be ready to ask questions as well
as answer them.
What's the best way to do this? Brainstorm a list of as many employment issues as possible, including the essentials such as salary, benefits and holiday leave. In addition to the basic questions, think about other, more detailed information, such as:
- what are the hours?
- how flexible are the hours?
- what is the weekend rotation commitment?
- what are your expectations of me?
- what are my opportunities for growth?
- will I have an on-call schedule?
- what type of health insurance is offered?
- is there an unpaid leave policy?
- how do you handle malpractice issues?
Also think about the other factors that will affect your on-the-job performance. They may not be the first things that come to mind in the interview seat, but they can play a big part in your career choices and your professional happiness. To get you started, begin with these questions:
- do you offer tuition assistance or other education coverage?
- do you promote from within?
- do you have a family leave policy?
- are there volunteer opportunities associated with this job?
- what time do weekends begin and end?
It will pay off in the long run to spend time thinking about these issues now. Create a list of questions to take with you to your interview so you can be sure to get the answers you are need. You deserve the best in your career, and it's up to you to go out and get it!
