In the Spotlight: Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians
In the Spotlight: Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians
Cardiovascular technologists and technicians aid in the diagnosis of a
patient's cardiac problems. They assist the attending physician in diagnosing
and analyzing all test results. Cardiovascular technologists may specialize in
three areas of practice: invasive cardiology, echocardiography and vascular
technology.
Cardiology technologists assist physicians due to their sensitivity and study on the cardiac realm. Technologists monitor the vital signs related to the heart during surgery, prepare a patient prior to cardiac catheterization, as well as administer any anesthetics. Technologists are responsible for monitoring the patient's progress during surgery.
According to the Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals, "The Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals supports all practitioners to become credentialed. ACVP sends representatives to Cardiovascular Credentialing International and to the National Board of Respiratory Care. ACVP also has members participating on the exam development committees ensuring the tests reflect not only the information that must be known theoretically, but the reality of the workplace."
In the year 2000, cardiovascular technologists and technicians held about 39,000 jobs with the majority employed by a major hospital. The majority of these technicians receive certified training at two to four year institutions. There are currently 23 programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology. All participants that receive the initial two-year training are eligible to obtain a professional certification in the specialty of their study. The first year of study is dedicated to general core courses. The second year of study branches out to the specialty area that the student wishes to enter. Technicians must be caring with the patients as well as analytical in their test result evaluation.
