Magnet Nursing at Inova Health System

Proud to be a Magnet Nursing Facility --
Inova Fairfax Hospital and Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children

Inova Fairfax Hospital/Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children is one of only 74 hospitals in the country to be awarded Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Services from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The hospital first received Magnet designation in 1997, and was re-designated in 2001. It is the only Magnet nursing facility in the metropolitan Washington DC area, as well as in the entire state of Virginia.

Magnet status is the highest level of recognition given to organized nursing services in the United States, and puts Inova Fairfax Hospital/Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children in a select and esteemed group. The award recognizes excellence in all aspects of nursing services, from leadership and management philosophy to the quality of patient care. It signifies that nurses continuously improve their practice and that the organization fosters their professional growth. Magnet status also recognizes nurses’ sensitivity to the cultural and ethnic diversity of patients and other caregivers.

What does it mean to be a Magnet hospital? Magnet hospitals are national models for nursing care. At Inova Fairfax Hospital/Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, magnet status reflects outstanding patient care and nursing practice excellence, distinguished nursing leadership, and an environment that recognizes and rewards professional nursing.

“Magnet status recognizes the great teamwork carried out by our nurses, staff, administrators and employees every day,” says Karen Drenkard, Chief Nurse Executive, Inova Health System. “Inova nurses and the care they provide truly are exceptional in every way, and represent the best the profession has to offer.”

Achieving Magnet status involves a volunteer, peer-reviewed process in which a team of professional registered nurses with experience in quality indicators, nursing administration and nursing evaluates a hospital’s nursing services, clinical outcomes and patient care delivery. As its guide, the team uses the Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators as outlined by the Congress of Nursing Practice of the American Nurses Association (ANA). Hospitals must meet the criteria outlined in the Magnet Standards of Nursing Practice.

In addition to Magnet recognition for Inova Fairfax Hospital/Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, Inova Health System is currently in the process of applying for Magnet recognition for all its hospitals in 2005. Only a handful of health care systems across the country currently enjoy such system-wide Magnet status.

“Inova nurses represent the best the profession has to offer.”

- Karen Drenkard, Chief Nurse Executive, Inova Health System
