About the Hospital
Inova Fairfax Hospital is a 753 bed campus with 206 departments, 5,700 employees
and 2,230 staff physicians. The campus includes the 163-bed Inova Fairfax Hospital
for Children and, with the opening of the Heart and Vascular Institute late 2004,
the hospital will expand to over 850 beds. The hospital annually continues to
receive awards as one of the best hospitals, both locally and nationally.
Last year there were over 50,700 admissions, over 11,000 deliveries, and 39,000
surgical procedures performed utilizing 39 operating suites.
The hospital contains a Level 1 trauma center that is currently under expansion
and remodeling to accommodate the more than 70,000 annual patient visits.
In 2005, the hospital will become the clinical campus for 3rd and 4th year medical
students from the VCU School of Medicine. Currently it is a major teaching affiliate
for the University of Virginia, Georgetown University and George Washington Schools
of Medicine. The 150 house staff consists of the hospital sponsored programs along
with the "integrated" residencies sponsored by the above mentioned
medical schools. Additional residents rotate from the University of Virginia,
Howard University and various other residency programs associated with the National
Capital Consortium.
The Health Science Library currently houses 525 Journals, 7,900 monographs and
13 computer work stations.
The hospital has obtained a $5,000,000 matching grant for building of a clinical
skill facility to supplement its current Education and Physician Conference Centers.
The hospital has established as part of its mission its commitment medical education
programs, which is evidenced by its sponsorship of the pediatric, pediatric emergency
medicine, surgery programs, and now the podiatric medical and surgical program.
