The Setting
The fellowship program is located at Inova Fairfax Hospital. This 833-bed general hospital offers all levels of medical care to the residents of Northern Virginia and serves as a tertiary referral center for an area spanning the Maryland-Washington DC - Virginia region. Inova Fairfax Hospital is located approximately 20 minutes from the heart of picturesque Washington, DC. The hospital has active residency programs and serves as an integral teaching affiliate to George Washington University Medical Center. Active medical and surgical services here include cardiovascular surgery, oncology, gynecology, pediatrics, high risk perinatology and neonatology, along with organ transplantation (cardiac, lung, liver, renal, pancreas, and bone marrow). The wide range of services provides a rich source of clinical experience and challenge for the consultation-liaison psychiatrist.
The psychiatric educational program at Inova Fairfax Hospital serves as a vital part of the residency training program of George Washington University's Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Thomas Wise is the Chairman of Inova Fairfax Hospital's Department of Psychiatry and is also Professor of Psychiatry at George Washington University. The faculty at Fairfax is all part of the clinical teaching staff at George Washington and has a broad range of skills and interests in consultation-liaison psychiatry. In addition to our C-L fellows, there are GW residents at the first-year and fourth-year levels who rotate on the psychiatric service of the hospital. Third and fourth year medical students from GW and VCU also will complete psychiatry rotations at our hospital.
The hospital is physically located near the center of Fairfax County, a dynamic suburb of Washington with a population of more than 1.2 million. This is the largest and fastest growing section of the metropolitan Washington area. It is the home of many high technology industries, trade associations and a large state university, George Mason University. Fairfax County has emerged as a vibrant community with a strong economic base, as well as multiple cultural and recreational opportunities.
