About the Hospital
Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children and the Inova Heart Institute combine to make the 825-bed flagship of Inova Health System in Northern Virginia. Last year we performed 35,000 operative cases in our 39 major and outpatient ORs, as well as over 10,000 deliveries (the third largest OB service in the United States). Our large surgical volume encompasses all surgical subspecialties, including over 6,000 general surgical procedures. We admitted over 2,000 trauma patients through our level I Inova Regional Trauma Center. Our vascular surgeons are involved in new endovascular procedures, while our laparoscopic experience includes a fully equipped Advances Surgical Technology and Educational Center ASTEC). Our pediatric surgeons participated in over 900 cases including a large number of neonatal and laparoscopic procedures.
Our faculty consists of full-time employees with specialties in general surgery, transplant, trauma, and critical care, plus a large volunteer faculty that supplements them. Among our faculty are eight women general, breast, and pediatric surgeons, as well as a diverse group of trauma, vascular and advanced laparoscopic individuals. Over the past three years, members of the faculty given presentations at multiple national meetings, including Association for Surgery of Trauma, American College of Surgeons, Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma and the Society Critical Care Medicine. Members of the faculty have been guest lecturers at the National Institutes of Health, Georgetown University and Howard University. Our department has generated numerous articles especially in the trauma and critical care literature. Multiple clinical studies ranging from the genomic study of obesity to CIREN (Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network) have faculty participation. The Institute of Research and Education supports numerous local research projects with nurses, statisticians and funding. We have a full schedule of teaching conferences, including morbidity and mortality, grand rounds, student presentation and chairman rounds. We also have a laparoscopic course and a research method course, journal club, and subspecialty grand rounds in transplant, vascular and trauma. Our basic science program is being revised to include telemedicine exchanges with MCV/VCU.
