Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac Rehabilitation programs are designed to help people
who have been diagnosed with or who are at risk for heart
disease. In cardiac rehabilitati
on,
patients gradually increase their physical endurance levels
through exercise, learn to make healthy lifestyle choices
and manage their own risk factors.
Most patients join a cardiac rehabilitation program approximately 4 weeks after discharge. To enroll, your physician needs to authorize your participation. Most cardiac rehab programs are comprised of scheduled, supervised exercise sessions (usually 2 to 3 times a week) for 2 to 3 months, as well as group and individualized education that includes dietary guidance, risk factor modification, and an individualized exercise plan.
Other important issues after recovery:
- Encourage your family members and/or significant others to take a CPR course. They are offered at the Inova HealthSource (703-750-8800), at the Red Cross and at local fire departments.
- If you ever experience warning signs of a heart attack, do not drive yourself (or have someone drive you) to the hospital. Call 911!
- If you need to call 911, here are some helpful guidelines: (1) provide the dispatch operator with your name, address and a brief description of the symptoms, (2) stay on the line and await further instructions, (3) provide instructions on how the rescue team can enter your home (if you are alone), and (4) when the rescue squad arrives, remain calm and keep children and pets away from them.
