Sex After Heart Disease

Sex, like other physical activities, can be resumed gradually, with a familiar partner, starting probably about 2 to 3 weeks after being discharged from the hospital. The physical exertion associated with sexual intercourse is about the same as walking up two flights of stairs. Sex is not only safe, but it can be beneficial by providing pleasure and stress release.

Here are some tips for resuming sexual activity:

  • Start slowly. Try hugging, kissing, and caressing at first.
  • Choose a time when you are rested.
  • Choose a quiet, relaxed place.
  • If you've had cardiac surgery, avoid twisting movements and try new positions to reduce the strain on your breastbone.
  • Overcome negative feelings about having heart disease.

Some problems that men experience with sex after being diagnosed with heart disease may be caused by certain medications. Some medications lower interest in sex or reduce sexual responsiveness. If you feel that medication is interfering with your sex life, talk to your physician about lowering the dosage or trying a different classification of drug.
