Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
Diagnosis and Intervention at the Inova Fairfax Hospial for Children
Cardiac catheterization is today's gold standard for evaluating the heart. This remarkable technology enables Inova's physicians to pinpoint congenital and other abnormalities and identify the best course of treatment.
In 2000, more than 200 diagnostic and interventional procedures were performed on children. For this reason, the laboratory is equipped with specially designed cameras and technology for studies of small infants and children.
Diagnostic and interventional procedures offered include:
- Valvuloplasty to repair congenital valve defects
- Angioplasty and stent placement to dilate critically narrowed vessels
- Balloon and blade atrial septostomy for treating complex cyanotic congenital heart disease
- Device occlusion to block the flow in specific unwanted blood vessels
