What is ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation)?
ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) is a cardiopulmonary bypass system that provides respiratory and cardiac support to children with reversible respiratory or cardiac problems that haven't responded to conventional treatments. ECMO can support patients while doctors treat their underlying illness. With ECMO, many children threatened by lethal illness have been able to make a full recovery.
