Inova Heart and Vascular Institute

Cardiac specialists with the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, coupled with advanced technologies, provide heart patients with the most advanced cardiac services. Diagnostic and interventional cardiac services including cardiac surgery, heart and lung transplantation, implantation of artificial heart devices and robot-assisted surgery as well as prevention, risk reduction, rehabilitation and patient education and home and long-term care are available to patients of all ages.

Cardiac Catheterization

Our cardiac catheterization experts perform more than 5,000 procedures annually and are therefore able to diagnose and manage the most complex patients. Among a limited number of physicians in the country who perform balloon mitral valvuloplasty for adults (a procedure which takes the place of open heart surgery), our physicians also conduct minimally invasive device closures for patients with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).

Electrophysiology

Electrophysiologists at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute conduct procedures on both adult and pediatric patient populations and offer patients the opportunity to participate in multiple investigational research trials. Procedures include electrophysiological testing, ablation of cardiac arrhythmia, pacemaker/internal cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation, ICD restudies, pacemaker/ICD extractions, tilt table testing and temporary pacemaker insertions.

Surgical Treatments

Inova Heart and Vascular Institute surgeons routinely use the internal mammary or radial arteries to obtain the best long-term results. While traditional open-chest surgery is still a safe option for some patients, our surgeons use minimally invasive approaches and off-pump bypass surgery whenever possible and have extensive experience replacing aortic and mitral valves with mechanical and tissue valves. In addition, the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute is one of the first cardiac programs in the United States to utilize the da Vinci Surgical System® for minimally invasive mitral valve repair.

Noninvasive and Outpatient Services

At the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, we provide nonivasive cardiology services which include fetal, pediatric and adult echocardiography as well as transesophageal echocardiography. Twenty-four hour holter monitoring, EKGs, stress testing, stress echocardiography and cardioversion services are also available. In addition, services include a pacemaker and adult congenital heart clinic. We are also pleased to have one of the first cardiac rehabilitation programs in the area offering comprehensive risk management.
