Involvement in decisions about your own health care and maintaining good communication with those who are providing that care are essential for a positive hospital experience. To help you communicate your needs to your team of health care professionals, here are a few tips and resources:
- learn the names of those taking care of you and what they are responsible for
- keep a list of your questions and important information you think your health care team should know
- let your doctors and staff know when you do not understand or cannot hear what they are saying to you
- ask a family member or friend to be with you during discussions about your treatment plan. This person can help by taking notes, listening and asking important questions.
If you are unhappy about any of the hospitals services or need help of any kind, contact a hospital patient representative to help resolve issues. The patient representative will bring your concerns to the immediate attention of those who can help. Call 703-504-3128. After hours, dial 0 and ask the operator to page the nursing supervisor. The hospital Bioethics Committee also can help facilitate discussion among parties involved in any medical-ethical dilemmas.

Star Program
The Star Program at Inova Alexandria Hospital recognizes employees who deliver outstanding customer service to patients, their families and coworkers. If any staff member (nurse, nutrition aide, administrative staff member, etc.) has been especially helpful, caring or courteous, you are encouraged to fill out a nomination form and turn it in to Human Resources or to any volunteer. Ask your nurse for a nomination form.
