A stroke occurs when a blood vessel bringing oxygen and nutrients to the brain bursts or is obstructed by a blood clot. When blood flow to the brain is interrupted, the brain is deprived of oxygen causing the affected area of the brain to die within minutes. Although dead brain tissue can not be saved, quick medical care can minimize the area of damage.
