Advance Directives
Another right you have is to execute an advance directive. The Virginia Advance Medical Directive will help ensure that your health care wishes are followed in the event you are unable to communicate them to us. A living will lets you state the types of treatment you do or do not wish to receive subsequent to the diagnosis of a terminal condition. Your doctor is required by law to honor your directive within the limits of the law. A durable power of attorney for health care allows you legally to appoint a relative or close friend to make health care decisions for you if you are unable to do so. We encourage you to talk to your physician about these difficult issues so that you make good, informed decisions. Your nurse or the patient representative can help you understand how a Virginia Advance Medical Directive works by providing additional information. The forms are free, and you do not need a lawyer to complete them.
