Breastfeeding Provides Many Benefits for Infants

  • Breastmilk is the ideal nutrition for the newborn infant
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding an infant for one full year
  • Breastfeeding decreases the incidence of many illnesses, such as asthma, juvenile diabetes, diarrhea, otitis media (ear infection) and certain childhood cancers
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is less likely in the breastfed infant
  • Breastfed infants even have higher IQs!

Breastfeeding Provides Many Benefits for the Mother

  • Breastfeeding is the most convenient and least expensive way to feed an infant
  • Mothers experience a unique bonding with their infant
  • Maternal weight loss is more rapid in the early postpartum period during breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding provides women with a certain measure of protection against pre-menopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer

Choosing to breastfeed your infant is a very important decision. Our staff is supportive and skilled in helping breastfeeding mothers and infants, sensitive to families' different cultural needs, eager to "meet the mother where she is" during the breastfeeding experience, and available to help the mother plan for how to continue breastfeeding if she returns to the workplace.
