Fluoroscopy
With fluoroscopy, real time imaging with X-rays can be viewed on a monitor. For the exam the patient may receive a type of contrast either orally or rectally. During a fluoroscopic exam, a patient usually lies on a table with a camera above, with images viewed on a monitor at the patient’s side. Common exams include Upper Gastrointestinal Tract radiography (upper GI series) and Lower Gastrointestinal Tract radiography (Barium Enema).
An upper GI is an X-ray exam of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine. An upper GI procedure is done to observe digestive function or to detect abnormalities such as ulcers, tumors or inflammation of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Patients who undergo this procedure are usually those who have difficulty swallowing, are complaining of chest and abdominal pain or reflux.
A Barium Enema is an X-ray evaluation of the large intestine, also known as the colon. A physician may order a lower GI examination to look for ulcers, benign tumors, cancer or signs of certain other intestinal illnesses.
