Interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments performed using imaging for guidance. Their procedures have less risk and pain and shorter recovery times compared to traditional open surgeries.
Within Interventional Radiology there are two areas of expertise:1) Vascular & Interventional – image-guided procedures performed throughout the body2) Interventional Neuroradiology – image-guided procedures performed in the neck and brain
There are a wide variety of conditions treated by Interventional Radiologists. Some of the most prevalent include: Peripheral Arterial Disease, Uterine Fibroids, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Compression Fractures, Stroke and treatments for Liver, Kidney and some bone cancers.
Interventionalists utilize a number of image-guided procedures in their work such as: angioplasty, stents, stent-grafts, thrombolytic therapy, placement of central venous access catheters, coil occlusions, and embolizations for bleeding.
