REBUILD is a program that started as a trauma support group in 1995 at Inova Fairfax Hospital, initiated to provide emotional support to recovering trauma patients. Facilitated by trauma social worker, Anna Bradford, LCSW, the group met twice monthly at Inova Fairfax Hospital to share their recovery experiences, and provide mutual support. Building on the group's interest in helping newly injured patients with the recovery process, group members began visiting trauma patients before each group, providing encouragement and support. Medical professionals frequently joined the group to discuss their role in the treatment of trauma patients, and to learn from group members about the experience of trauma, treatment and recovery. In the fall of 1995, after one particularly inspiring visit from a local paramedic, it became clear that REBUILD members had as much to offer the community as the community had to offer them in their recovery. The paramedic arranged for the group to meet with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Academy to discuss their experiences "in the field" during the rescue. A panel of REBUILD members described their accidents and the rescue scene. This was followed by a discussion session in which the emergency medical personnel learned more about the trauma victims experiences, feelings, and memories of the event, and group members learned about the often emotional experiences of the rescue workers. After this first successful venture into the community, REBUILD members have continued to provide 2-3 educational presentations monthly, offering the patients' perspective to trauma caregivers including emergency medical personnel, as well as nurses, physicians, physical medicine therapists, social workers and hospital staff. REBUILD support groups have expanded as well to include the original general trauma support group, a support group for survivors and family of traumatic brain injury, and one for spinal cord injury.
