What level of education is required to be eligible for a Child Life internship?
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree or complete their degree with this internship. The Bachelor's (or Master's) degree does not necessarily have to be in Child Life; other majors can include Psychology, Child Development, Education, Counseling, etc.
What can best prepare me for this internship?
Experience with children in a hospital setting (volunteer experience or a child life practicum) is strongly preferred. This exposure best prepares you to work in the unique environment of a hospital. Additionally, prior experience in a hospital setting will help you solidify your own commitment to the field of Child Life.
Is this internship an unpaid position?
Yes, this is an unpaid position. Parking and educational materials are covered; however, interns are responsible for their own housing and living expenses. Once an intern is hired, the Child Life staff can recommend ways to find temporary housing in the area.
What happens after my application is received?
We review each application upon receipt and contact qualified candidates that meet our criteria for an on-site or phone interview with the Child Life staff. We require an on-site interview before hiring. Applicants are responsible for their own travel expenses.
What is an intern's typical weekly schedule?
Interns are expected to work 40 hours a week, following the same schedule as their rotation supervisor, to acquire the most realistic and consistent work experience. This schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, during daytime hours, but can vary with staff schedules. Interns will work at least one evening and one weekend day shift during the internship to gain exposure to special programming.
