Inova Loudoun Hospital is committed to providing the community with comprehensive emergency care around-the-clock, seven days a week. For your convenience, we offer two locations in Loudoun County. Both locations provide medical evaluations and treatment by specially trained physicians who are board certified in Emergency Medicine.

For the most serious injuries and illnesses that require transfer to a major trauma or specialty center, ambulance and helicopter transport is immediately available.

Because of our commitment to the health of the community, no patient is ever turned away from our Emergency Departments for any reason. We treat all patients regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, nationality or ability to pay.

What to Expect When You Visit the ER
No one likes an unexpected trip an Emergency Room, but your visit can be less stressful if you understand how one operates and what to expect.

Triage
When you first arrive at either of our ER's, you'll be evaluated by a "triage nurse" who will take your name, ask the reason you are seeking treatment, and inquire about your medical history and take your vital signs.

Triage is an important process that makes sure the patients with the most serious needs are treated first. Every effort will be made to take you directly from triage to an exam room. However, an ER cannot treat patients on a first-come, first-served basis. This is why someone who arrives after you may be treated before you. Our goal is to treat everyone as quickly and efficiently as possible. If your condition worsens while you are in our Waiting Room, immediately ask to see the triage nurse.

Some patients may be seen in Fast Track, a section of the ER equipped for treating minor illnesses and injuries.

Registration
During the registration process, we'll obtain necessary information to begin your chart. We'll assign you an identification number so that lab tests and x-rays may be ordered and the results attached to your chart as quickly as possible. We'll also collect information about your medical insurance.

If you are taken directly to an exam room, the Registration staff will come to your treatment room to gather the necessary information. All patients should refrain from eating or drinking prior to being seen.

Treatment
Once you're in our treatment area, our physicians and staff will evaluate your situation in detail and begin the appropriate treatment. This will require a detailed medical history and physical exam based on your symptoms and conditions. Blood tests, X-rays and/or more complicated tests may be ordered to confirm a diagnosis.

Once you're in the treatment area, the typical time required for the work-up and testing is 1-3 hours. When the tests are completed and reviewed, the physician will discuss a recommended course of treatment with you. If you need to be admitted to the hospital from the Lansdowne Campus ER, you may experience a delay while a room is prepared for you and the ER physician contacts your regular physician or the on-call physician. You will continue to be cared for by the ER nurses while you wait.

If you are being seen at our Leesburg Campus ER, and you require surgery or admission to the hospital, an ambulance (always available on site) will transport you to the Lansdowne Campus. Inova Loudoun Hospital is equipped with four operating suites, an ICU, Birthing Inn, Pediatrics unit, telemetry and general medical beds for your continued care. Doctors and nurses from the Leesburg ER will communicate your symptoms, diagnosis and treatment needs to the staff at Lansdowne Campus, who will be ready when you arrive.

Discharge
If you are discharged from the ER, you will receive complete written instructions for:

Your diagnosis and treatment recommendations
Any medications that may have been prescribed
Follow up medical care, if required, including the name of the healthcare provider you will need to call to make a follow up appointment
Wound care and/or special diet instructions, if appropriate.

If you do not understand your discharge instructions please ask for an explanation. If you have questions after discharge, please call us and ask for the ER Team Leader.

Patient Advocate
A Patient Advocate is present most of the day to help with phone calls, updates on delays, patient status, etc.

Visitors
Visitors are allowed in patient treatment rooms at the discretion of the healthcare provider.Normally, 1-2 family members or friends are permitted in the treatment room. To protect theprivacy of all patients, it is essential that visitors remain at the patient's bedside while inside the treatment area.

Culture Results
Some bacterial culture results take 72 hours for a final reading and will not be available during your Emergency Room visit. When we receive the results, we will notify you or your personal physician of any results requiring a prescription or a change of treatment.

X-rays
Plain x-rays taken during the evening and at night will initially be read by the ER physician they will be re-read the next morning by a radiologist. You will be contacted if there are any additional findings.

Special studies such as CT and Ultrasound etc. are read by a radiologist.

Billing Overview
You will receive separate bills for different services rendered, including one from Inova Loudoun Hospital for ER services and supplies, and another from Commonwealth Emergency Physicians, the physicians group responsible for your care while you were in the ER.
