Joint Replacement Inova Orthopedic Services provides comprehensive care for patients who need replacement of hip, knee or shoulder joints.
Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, home to the Inova Joint Replacement Center, is a nationally recognized center of excellence for total hip and knee replacement. In 1999 the hospital was selected as one of the nation's Top 100 orthopedic hospitals for its clinical excellence and efficient delivery of care for joint replacement surgery. The award was based on a study of more than 2,166 hospitals nationwide.
Joint replacement surgery is a highly specialized procedure that requires pre-hospital planning, hospitalization, home care and rehabilitation. Assistance with every phase of preparation for surgery and after care is provided through our customized orientation process.
The joint replacement team includes board-certified surgeons specializing in joint replacement surgery. Nurses, physical and occupational therapists and case managers in the center work solely with joint replacement patients to insure the best outcome for each patient. From pre-operative assessment to rehabilitation, care is customized for the individual patient.
A gym and physical therapy equipment available on the orthopedic unit permit convenient, rapid rehabilitation and a shorter hospital stay for patients.
Sports Injuries, Arthroscopic Surgery and Cartilage Transplantation Physicians and staff affiliated with our orthopedic services are highly trained and skilled in treating a range of sports-related injuries. We provide the latest arthroscopic equipment, and our specialized physicians have extensive experience in this complex but minimally invasive method of diagnosis and treatment. With arthroscopy, many patients, including those requiring procedures such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, can be treated on an outpatient basis. By eliminating the overnight hospital stay, arthroscopy offers greater comfort and convenience to the patient, as well as considerable cost savings over open surgeries.
In addition to arthroscopic surgery a new transplant procedure called "autologous cartilage transplantation" (ACI) is also available on an outpatient basis. This transplant procedure allows cells, which have previously been removed from the patient's knee during arthroscopic surgery to be grown in culture and then reimplanted into their knee to repair focal cartilage damage and hopefully prevent subsequent arthritis.
Many of our orthopedic physicians affiliated with our sports medicine program work with local athletic teams and organizations to make injury prevention and treatment information available to the community. Our physicians and allied health professionals also make presentations in the community on exercise, fitness and other sports medicine topics.
Spine Surgery Treatment of Spinal disorders is a highly specialized process. Our skilled and knowledgeable orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons have the experience and expertise to accurately diagnose and treat problems of the spine caused by congenital conditions, injury or disease.
Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Hand and upper extremity surgery is an exacting subspecialty requiring a high degree of skill and knowledge. Hand specialists and staff of Inova Orthopedic Services use the latest equipment and techniques to help patients achieve the best possible recovery, whether the problem is caused by trauma, repetitive motion injury, congenital or degenerative problems or other illness or injury.
Foot and Ankle Surgery Foot and ankle surgery can restore mobility and independence to people who have problems caused by injury or disease. We use the latest surgical techniques and carefully tailored rehabilitation plans to give the patient the best chance for a full return to activity.
