Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children Receives $25,000 Grant for Cancer Research

St. Baldrick’s Foundation Chooses Hospital for Local Support; Hospital’s Doctor to Become “Shavee”

Falls Church, VA— Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children will accept a $25,000 grant for childhood cancer research from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a group that raises money solely for childhood cancer research in an unusual way – by shaving people’s heads. At a check presentation ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 14, Nick Park, MD, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, will become the latest St. Baldrick’s “shavee.”

“The people of Virginia have shown a deep commitment to our Foundation and childhood cancer research,” said Kathleen Ruddy, Executive Director, St. Baldrick’s Foundation. “We’re proud to honor them and the outstanding work and dedication of the hospital’s staff with this grant.”

“We’re incredibly excited about receiving this grant from St. Baldrick’s,” said David Ascher, MD, chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. “This grant gives our hospital the opportunity to conduct research that we hope will have a positive impact on the lives of our young patients and their families.”

Inova’s pediatric oncologists manage the full range of inpatient and outpatient services, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

St. Baldrick’s Foundation is known for its unique approach to fundraising. Every year,
men and women make a commitment to shave their heads in return for donations of financial support from friends and family. Since 2000, more than 26,000 shavees have shaved their heads at 828 St. Baldrick’s events, raising more than $20 million.
