Inova Fairfax Hospital Names Dr. L. Reuven Pasternak Chief Executive Officer

February 6, 2008
Falls Church, VA— L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, MPH, MBA, has been named the new chief executive officer of the Inova Fairfax Hospital campus and executive vice president of Academic Affairs for Inova Health System. This leadership role includes oversight of Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, and the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. He will assume his duties March 31.
Dr. Pasternak most recently served as executive vice president and chief medical officer of Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, a system of seven hospitals. In that role, he assumed overall system responsibility for clinical service lines, quality of patient care, patient safety and graduate medical education. In addition, he oversaw the growth and strategic development of a 170-physician primary care network.
Prior to his role at Health Alliance, Dr. Pasternak served as Vice Dean of the Bayview Campus for Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he oversaw clinical and education programs, and managed extensive corporate and academic research activities, including those involving the National Institutes of Health.
“Dr. Pasternak brings excellent leadership qualities and experiences,” said Mark Stauder, COO, Inova Health System. “He understands the challenges of working within a system of hospitals and his experiences as a physician leader will be extremely beneficial as we continue to expand our research and education programs on the Inova Fairfax Hospital campus and across Inova Health System.”
Dr. Pasternak served on active duty with the U.S. Naval Medical Corps during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1998 with the rank of Commander.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international studies and economics from Johns Hopkins University, and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Pasternak also holds a Masters of Public Health from the University of North Carolina and a Masters in Business Administration from Loyola College.
Inova Health System is a not-for-profit health care system based in Northern Virginia that consists of hospitals and other health services, including emergency and urgent care centers, home care, nursing homes, mental health and blood donor services, and wellness classes. Governed by a voluntary board of community members, Inova’s mission is to improve the health of the diverse community it serves through excellence in patient care, education and research. Inova provides a healthy environment for its patients, families, visitors, staff and physicians by prohibiting tobacco use on its campuses.
