About Your Surgery
Surgery Approach and Technique for Minimally Invasive Hip Surgery
Minimally invasive total hip replacement refers to a family of operations designed to allow total hip replacement to be performed through smaller incisions than conventional total hip replacement (less than 3 to 6 inches compared to 10 to 12 inches). The incision is reduced and trauma to the surrounding soft tissues is minimized, the technique still involves the cutting of bone, realigning the soft tissue mechanism that supports the joint and placing the implant. Specially designed instruments provide the access needed to perform the surgery through the smaller incision
Pre-operative preparation may include:
- nutritional assessment
- physical therapy conditioning for improving strength and endurance
- participation in patient education
Preparation to be Discharged to Home
A minimally invasive surgery patients’ length of stay may be shorter in the hospital, but it is very important that there are family members or friends at home to help out for a few days after discharge.
