Amputee Rehabilitation Program

This program is designed to assist individuals in the rehabilitation processAmputee Rehabilitation Program following limb amputation. Our services cover a wide spectrum, from pre-prosthetic exercise and conditioning to advance prosthetic training. Evaluations are performed by occupational and/or physical therapists to create individualized program for each amputee.

Evaluation components include:

  • skin integrity of residual limb
  • strength and range of motion measurements
  • functional mobility assessment: sit to stand, getting from surface to surface, moving in the bed
  • balance assessment
  • activities of daily living (ADL) assessment: grooming, dressing, cooking, bathing and work-related activities
  • gait assessment
  • functional use of upper extremities

Following the evaluation, a comprehensive rehabilitation program will be designed for each client. Throughout the rehabilitation program, contact will be maintained with the referring physicians and with the prosthetist to address any issues that may arise with your prosthesis or discuss progress. Community resource material for clients and families is also available.

A rehabilitation program may address any of the following activities:

  • learning how to put on and take off the prosthesis
  • stretching
  • strengthening
  • functional mobility
  • activities of daily living such as grooming, cooking, dressing, bathing and work-related activities
  • balance training
  • gait training
  • advanced community mobility and leisure activity training

In addition to the above activities, each client will receive a home exercise program (HEP). The HEP is an important part of any rehabilitation program and will likely address strength, range of motion, and preparation of the residual limb for prosthetic fitting, all vital activities for any amputee. Dedication to a home exercise program will make prosthetic training easier and complications less likely.
